Countdown to 200 Years of PMMA Begins

Updated: Nov 27, 2019

It's not every day that we get to hear an institution celebrating its bicentennial year, but Philippine Merchant Marine Academy (PMMA), the leading organization in maritime education, is on its road to achieving just that.

Originally known as Escuela Nautica de Manila when it was founded in 1820 (and later on renamed as Philippine Nautical School in 1913), PMMA’s countdown to their 200th year has started via a media launch held at Club Intramuros Golf Course last Sunday, September 15. Alumni from different batches started the celebration with a golf tournament in the morning, with the media event and awarding held in the afternoon.

Capt. Joel Y. Abutal (PMMA Superintendent), speaks during the recent launching of rites of the Bicentennial celebration of the PMMA in Intramuros, Manila that was also by Brig. Gen. Melvin Ordiales (Host Class 2020 Chairman), CE Chito Felix Majabague (PMMAAAI President), Capt. Jess Morales (ISP President), Capt. Oscar Orbeta (Top Ever Managing Director)

Fresh off their successful fire-tree adoption event in Zambales a few weeks ago, PMMA showcased all its planned activities leading into the bicentennial celebration on April 4, 2020. Next on their exciting lineup is their participation in Oktoberfest, where attendees will be treated to a movie block screening and a bingo event.

PMMA Chairman Capt. Oscar Orbeta stated that the funds generated during these events are used to help the institution continue its aim - to provide opportunities for those interested in joining the maritime industry.

He also considers the week-long celebration next year, which will gather alumni and stakeholders globally, as an event to raise ‘awareness to the young graduates,’ as they are needed to keep PMMA going.

When asked about what the public should expect from PMMA on their next centuries to come, PMMA President Supt. Joel Abutal said that the main aim is for the institution to move into “Education 4.0,” which includes “education-to-employment” programs, use of Augmented Reality (AR), and the continuous increase of beneficiaries.

The PMMA Bicentennial Celebration tickets are now available at Php 1,000.00 per ticket. More details are available on their website (www.pmma.edu.ph) and on their official Facebook page (Philippine Merchant Marine Academy - PMMAOfficial.)
